An “open fortress” that has now decided to focus even more on its new vocation as a place of encounter and culture. From Sunday 30 April 2017, the Ferdinando Museum of Fortifications and Frontiers will be open to the public. Located in the Opera Ferdinando, on the first level of the fortified stronghold, the museum offers an engaging journey through the evolution of defensive techniques, siege systems and the concept of frontiers. A space, in essence, that tells the story of the museum itself.

The tour allows the public to discover another 2,000 square metres of the Fort, moving through three new sections: the “Museum of the Fort and Fortifications”, “The Fortified Alps (1871-1946)” and “The Alps, a frontier?”. A journey through history via recreated scenes with weapons and scale reconstructions of sections of fortification walls, models, films and authentic weapons, with a narrative that highlights the evolution of fortresses through the progress of military strategies, materials and construction techniques, starting from the Roman era and continuing through to the new architectural and ballistic solutions of the 20th century.
